Friday, June 27, 2008 ( [ have YOU been hacked before? ] @ 12:47 AM ) Situation: 1.) You own a blog which you are very very proud of.  2.) Being a good guy/girl, you blog about issues that are neither sensitive nor attention-seeking..  3.) You lead a very peaceful life! ((:  4.) THEN ONE DAY... 5.) You realised that you could not log in to your account! Thinking that it was only a bug or something, you went to view your blog webpage happily. THEN YOU STARE AT YOUR PAGE IN HORROR.  6.) Your blog no longer exists! Instead, it's being replaced by some hacker who uses your webpage and personal information to advertise about inappropriate things!!!        And so, horror, despair, disgust...and many other mixed emotions filled you, leaving you staring at your damaged blog. In the end, you have no choice but to create a new blog, losing all your beloved archives and such. (not to mention the trouble to explain to all your horrified friends when they visit your blog) SO. have YOU been hacked before?? Many of us have surely been hacked, or have heard of stories of friends being hacked once. Maybe some of us have even hacked unintentionally once in a while! Hacking not only includes breaking into personal accounts on the net, it also includes spam mails etc that sends viruses to damage your computer. Even I have encountered hacking incidents once! But the positive side to it is, I wasn't the one being hacked, I had "hacked" unintentionally into a stranger's account! BUT DON'T WORRY. I was a good girl (still am, I suppose XD) so despite the fact that I was surprised and curious, I did not touch the person's account again. So how did it happen? Basically I was playing Neopets. (When I was small) When I first signed up, I had wanted to use my own name as the username. However, it was already taken so I added some numbers behind it to make it available. Then one day, after a long period when I finally decided to visit Neopets again, I forgot my username. So instinctively, I went to try my name as the username (since I reckoned I would have used it as username when I signed up) and typed in my password. Magically, I entered another person's account! (First instinct = stare at the strange pet in front of me and ask "WHEN DID MY PET TURN INTO THAT?!") So after exploring around, I finally realised that I had accidentally "hacked" into this person's account, haha. WHY?! From my experience, I found out that one of the reasons we can get hacked easily would be due to the fact that our passwords are too common. That is why whenever I sign up for memberships or anything, I use a strong long password with a mix of alphabets and numbers. ((: Besides my Neopet incident, I've also heard of or witnessed many of my friends being hacked. These includes hacking of blogs and hacking of MSN. Imagine yourself chatting with this person you assume is your close friend: "Hey XYZ!!! =DD" "Hello! What are you doing?" "Nothing..." "OH btw, can I have a photo of you? I need it for something." Then the friend turns out to be a hacker who asks you for your photo, which then is used for things we don't wish to discuss. The devastating results! THIS IS WHY, we have to know more about how to protect ourselves in this large unsecure network! But since we don't know exactly how hackers hack us, surely we won't know how to do so, right? Therefore, I advice all of you to attend workshops like this one! Complimentary Workshop on Cybersecurity Only when we have knowledge on Cybersecurity, would the internet then be a much safer network for us to dwell in!  |
